The Winter Fuel Payment should automatically be given to you if you are eligible to receive it by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), if you are on the state pension or if you receive another social security benefit (but not Housing Benefit, Council Tax Reduction, Child Benefit or Universal Credit). You should have been paid this year’s allowance. Here are the steps you can take if you haven’t received your payment yet.
The Winter Fuel Payment is designed to help pensioners pay for their heating bills over the coldest months of the year.
If you are eligible you could receive between £100 and £300.
How can you claim this allowance?
The DWP is supposed to automatically give this allowance to those who are eligible.
The Department for Work and Pensions said: “You should have been paid for winter 2021 to 2022.”
The sum is usually paid in November or December, so if you haven’t received your allowance you should act now.
First, you will need to check if you are eligible to receive this payment.
Pensioners born before September 26, 1995, should be eligible for this extra allowance.
However, you must also meet the relevant “residency” criteria.
You must have lived in the UK for at least one day during the “qualifying week.”
The qualifying week last year was from September 20 to September 26, 2021.
If you didn’t live in the UK during this period you might still be eligible for the payment if both of the following apply:
- You lived in Switzerland or a European Economic Area (EEA) during the qualifying week
- You have a genuine and sufficient link to the UK. This can include having lived or worked there, or having family in the UK.
But there are exceptions to this rule. Those who live in certain countries cannot apply for this allowance.
Those Britons who live in Cyprus, France, Gibraltar, Greece, Malta, Portugal or Spain are barred from the scheme.
This means that many expats won’t be allowed to claim this allowance.
What happens if you haven’t received your payment?
If you haven’t received your payment but you think you are eligible your can phone, text or video replay the Winter Fuel Payment centre.
The DWP have a dedicated enquires line which is open from Monday to Friday, 9.30am to 3.30pm.
