Income inequality has been increasing at a faster rate than any time in the past three-quarters of a century, according to the latest data. And its just the opposite of what economists have been predicting since the 1990s. The New York Times recently ran a story on the end of the American dream. The story quotes Larry Bartels, a professor at Vanderbilt University, as saying, If the American Dream had any meaning at all, income equality should have declined over the past quarter-century, not accelerated. The Times also wrote about a 2012 Pew Research Center poll that found only 26 percent of Americans believe the American Dream still exists. Yet the facts remain, well, and as youll see below, theyre not looking in the right place. For more than 30 years, government data shows a drop in median household income, but the trend in the latest and most recent data is more than opposite. Instead of stagnating or declining, median household income for the middle 60 percent has actually been rising. In fact, this is what economists would call a middle income trap. It was a major theme of a new book I wrote, Stuck in the Middle with You: What Middle-Income People Really Feel Like. I was actually surprised and gratified to see it was picked up in a widely-read blog post by journalist Matthew Yglesias.
