James Woodhouse, 41, was arrested on suspicion of rape in the middle of a busy road in Whitechapel and was bailed until October. The Labour councillor was arrested after a 38-year-old woman was picked up in a taxi at around 3pm on June 21. The man was taken to a police station where he was interviewed under caution, but no charges were brought. On June 25 the woman – who was not named publicly – contacted the Met in relation to the incident. According to police, Woodhouse was picked up by the woman as she was returning to her flat in Whitechapel – where she lives with her partner and his family. She told police that she was walking down a street in Southwark with the woman who in the taxi turned out to be Woodhouse. The woman said that on the way to her home she had stopped to urinate in a public toilet. She said she then went back to the flat and spent a few minutes there. But she alleges that when her partner returned from work he took her to a taxi rank where a man picked them up and drove them to Woodhouses flat where they drank vodka with his parents.
