Endoftext By David Ingram, Special To CNNEditors note: David Ingram is a senior editor at the National Journal, where he has covered national and international politics for almost 30 years. The opinions expressed in this commentary are solely those of the author CNN, – Its the first election in decades without a sitting president. Its a political world without an apology tour but, for the first time, Americans have an opportunity to see the president explain exactly what he believes. In 2008, Barack Obama ran a presidential campaign in which, as he put it, he didnt apologize for America, he just said sorry about the way Americans were treated by our friends and foes. The man who won the presidency in 2008 would probably have been better advised to start apologizing for America as a whole, rather than just a few groups. The country is, in many ways, more polarized than ever. That polarization has been fed by presidential candidates who make Americas challenges, past and present, the focus of their campaigns. In this case, Donald Trump and his supporters dont just see foreign policies they dislike as a threat to the United States and its allies. They see foreign policy as a threat to American sovereignty. Thats not just an irrational fear its a threat to the countrys own defense as well as its international reputation and standing. It has even led some Republican politicians to support a more isolationist foreign policy. That is an important point to remember when, as President-elect Trump now vows, hell take strong action against nations that he sees as trying to harm the United States, even if that means attacking them. In the run-up to the presidential election, Trump was criticized for saying it was the United States absolute right to take action to stop North Koreas nuclear weapons but, as a candidate, he called for a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our countrys representatives can figure out what the hell is going on. You know, were going to keep radical Islamic terrorists the hell out of our country. We dont want them here, folks, he said.
