Password changesYou may never have heard of the group, but if you grew up in Wisconsin in the 1990s, it was as big as the Badgers. Led by Badgers legends John Shumate and Mark Lewis, the UW Crusaders dominated the mid-1990s at Wisconsin, the NCAA tournament and in the national sports scene, winning nine NCAA titles in 11 years and the school records for most points and assists. They had a history of playing in the Big Ten Tournament, they lost to Villanova in 1990, and won two NCAA Division I championships in Milwaukee, 1997, 98But after making it to the NIT in 1997, the Badgers team and program started to decline. The Crusaders were on an unexpected run as they were one of the final ten teams to play in the Big Ten Tournament when Wisconsin lost to Michigan State. By 2002, the Crusaders had begun to fade, winning six more Big Ten games, but the Badgers would not be far behind. That year, UW, with the help of Jim Boeheim and Bo Ryan, made a coaching change that would change the direction of Wisconsin football and the team forever. Jim Schlossnagle was fired, and Frank Solich was hired to take his place. Solich had a long career at Iowa State, having helped mold a program that had won three NCAA titles, 1993, 93, 99, as well as three Big Eight titles, 1977, 78, 79 He won more games at Iowa State, 25, than any coach in school history; he coached six national championship teams, including a national title in 1999. Solichs tenure with Iowa State was marked by success, but after Iowa State, Solich would go on to create a dynasty at Wisconsin.
