In order to make phone enquiries regarding the benefit payment go smoother, the DWP has changed the online PIP Handbook Guide. This alteration specifically clarifies that a “National Insurance number is not required” to get the application process started on future claims. While a National Insurance will still be needed at some point of the application process to complete the claim, it will no longer be required as part of the initial call to the DWP.
On its website, the Government states: “The telephone call can be made by someone supporting the claimant.
“The claimant must be present so that they can confirm the person supporting them has their permission to make the call.”
Furthermore, the DWP goes on to provide further guidance on preparing for the phone call ahead of making a claim.
The department added: “It is important that the claimant has their basic information ready before they call the PIP claim line. Not having this information ready may delay progress of the claim.”
New claimants will still need to provide their full name, date of birth, full address and daytime contact number.
Later on in the application process, they will need to provide their National Insurance number which can be found on letters to do with their benefits.
On top of this, claimants will need to clarify their nationality or immigration status to the DWP in order to qualify for support.
They will need to also provide their bank or building society information and the details of their GP or other health professional.
Other crucial information which is necessary for the application is if the claimant has spent any time in hospitals, care homes or hospices as of late.
As well as this, they will be responsible for declaring any time spent abroad, specifically if they have been abroad for more than four weeks at a time over the last 18 months.
For claimants who are originally from another country, notably a European Economic Area (EEA) state or Switzerland, they will need to declare whether they have received benefits before while living elsewhere.
Those looking to claim PIP will also have to declare if they are working or paying any insurance towards an EEA state or Switzerland.
As of July 2021, there were 2.8 million people across the country claiming PIP, according to figures from the DWP.
Those who are successful with their PIP application could end up getting £23.70 and £152.15 a week to help with additional costs.
The benefit payment is designed to assist with the extra expenses associated with having a long-term disability or illness.
It is paid every four weeks to claimants. This is the equivalent of somewhere between £94.80 and £608.60 each month of tax-free cash.
In order to qualify for the payment, claimants must have a condition which affects their daily living for three months and there is an expectation said difficulties will continue for a further nine months.
During the application process, the DWP will examine the validity of someone’s claim over this time frame, considering how the condition will change over time.
