iPhone running slow? Why today's heatwave might be to blame – and how you can fix it

World News

IPHONE users could be experiencing a major slow-down in performance today – all thanks to the hot weather.

Brits are enjoying soaring 28C temperatures across the country, but they might suffer some slow iPhone headaches too.

Like many gadgets, the Apple iPhone can struggle with high temperatures.

When smartphones get too hot or too cold, they can start to experience weird issues.

You might notice a drop in battery life during extremely cold weather, or sluggish performance on hot days.

"Low- or high-temperature conditions might cause the device to change its behaviour," Apple explains.

Apple admits that "performance slows" with some apps when the phone gets very hot.

You might even get a warning that says "Temperature: iPhone needs to cool down before you can use it".

This will stop your iPhone from functioning properly.

That's because when phones get hot, Apple will throttle the performance of the processor to keep it down.

To avoid this, Apple specifically warns against:

  • Leaving the device in a car on a hot day
  • Leaving the device in direct sunlight for an extended period of time
  • Using certain features in hot conditions or direct sunlight for an extended period of time, such as GPS tracking or navigation in a car, playing a graphics-intensive game, or using augmented-reality apps

What to do if your iPhone gets too warm

The best solution is to turn your phone off immediately – especially if you get a warning screen.

Keeping your phone on will reduce the speed at which your phone can cool down.

And if you're running intensive apps, this can make the situation even worse.

You should also try to move your iPhone to a cooler environment.

That means keeping it out of direct sunlight and very warm, enclosed spaces.

So don't stick it in your pocket, where it'll be rubbing up against your leg.

Don't keep it in your hand either, because that will warm the device up.
