A character stereotyped is a character that is typically seen as an average of a group members, such as an ordinary American. In social psychology its an expectation that people might have about every person of a particular group. Character that is typically seen as an ordinary of a group members. And now that Ive explained what stereotypes are, its time to answer a question I get asked more than any other: Why use stereotypes. Well, for the most part, most people dont even know what stereotypes are. I do though, because stereotypes get in the way of creating more meaningful characters that really stand out and are going to stick in your mind. Its like having a blank slate, so you have to build a new character with a new, fresh outlook. Its a lot easier than trying to fill that blank with something that hasnt been done before or hasnt been written as well in that particular genre. You need to be creative with your writing, in other words. There are no black characters in science fiction. Or there are, but very few and theyre usually just one dimensional, or come in two flavors: the stereotypical goody two shoes scientist and the stereotypical white male space marine. Im looking at you, David Bowie When you have these kinds of characters around, its going to be very easy to fall into the same kind of stereotypes as a result, which is why I think its so important to keep the focus on the story. Let the characters be the main characters, and dont write them in a way thats going to make them come across as stereotype characters. Now, there are other, related problems, and Im not going to try to address those. But what I am going to address is one of the big reasons why I dont write a lot of black characters. Its not because I dont feel its worth it, or that I dont believe its necessary in order for a story to be considered a good one. On the contrary, it is worth it even if it was only one character. Its just that for a story to be considered worth reading, it all has to come together. It has to feel complete, it has to have all the pieces youre going to need to put all its pieces together.
