World News

WHATSAPP is quietly testing a new feature that changes the app forever.

A handful of WhatsApp fans are already using the new tool – and eventually it'll arrive for billions of users.

WhatsApp regularly trials new features in the beta version of the app.

And now WhatsApp is testing a big change to status updates.

These are like Instagram Stories, but for WhatsApp.

In a new version of the feature, you can upload voice notes as status updates.

That means people can listen to a short snippet of whatever you want to say.

It's a bit like broadcasting a voice note to all of your contacts.

You can record a voice note up to a maximum length of 30 seconds.

And you get the option to discard it before posting it, if you didn't quite get the message across.

People will only be able to listen to your voice note statuses if they have the latest update too.

The voice notes will disappear after 24 hours.

Sadly it's impossible to say when the new feature will move beyond beta to the general version of the app.

It could take days, weeks or even months.

But if you want to try it first, follow our guide below to join the WhatsApp beta.

How to get WhatsApp beta

To download WhatsApp beta for your smartphone you need to go to Google Play on your Android and search for WhatsApp.

Scroll down the page until you see "Become a Beta Tester".

Tap the "I'm In" button and then click "Join" to confirm.

Now all you have to do is wait for the update to the beta version of the app.

Joining the WhatsApp beta on iOS is more difficult, and has limited capacity.
