A source said: “It’s easy to see why they have stayed put in such an amazing home. Helen just felt after 30 years, it was time for a change and Taylor agreed.”

The 1911-built mansion has 11 bathrooms and nine bedrooms, with a guest home in the six-acre grounds.

The agent selling the property claims the “large formal rooms and outside living area are ideal for large groups and family get-togethers, with relaxed indoor-outdoor architecture taking full advantage of the sunny California weather”.

The pair bought the vast home in the early 1990s.

Its previous owners include actor Dustin Farnum, star of Cecil B De Mille’s silent 1914 western The Squaw Man, and Gail Patrick, executive producer of Perry Mason. The home was a location for the TV drama.

Dame Helen and her husband, both Academy Award winners, are offering it for sale at £14million or for rent at £33,000 a month.

Joyce Rey, of estate agent Coldwell Banker, said: “This remarkable compound abuts Runyon Canyon at the top of a private winding drive. This gated enclave is both a private sanctuary and a distinguished setting for lavish entertaining.”
