Drivers offered free £50 to help with ULEZ costs – here's how to find out if you're eligible | The Sun

DRIVERS having to put up with annoying ULEZ rules could be entitled to £50 towards their costs.

Under the controversial rules, all cars which don't meet certain standards have to pay £12.50 a day to drive in inner London.

To cushion the blow, Richmond upon Thames' 'Good Move' scheme is offering a free £50 pay-as-you-go Oyster card for public transport for those who commit to owning a compliant vehicle within a year of ULEZ's updated regulations.

Alternatively, borough residents can nab a one-year free membership with Zipcar with £50 driving credit or a free three-month trial with the Peddle My Wheels Try Before You Bike scheme, The Telegraph reported.

Vouchers will only be available to local residents, businesses and charities.

The ULEZ scheme has caused growing anger among disgruntled motorists.

Research commissioned by the Centre for Economics and Business Research warned that the updated ULEZ plans would cost the city’s economy another £369million on top of the £253million caused by the existing scheme.

Alexander Ehmann, chairman of Richmond's transport and air quality committee, has criticised London Mayor Sadiq Khan for not offering financial relief to the town's residents.

He said: "Addressing air quality is a top priority for Richmond upon Thames and this borough wants to build on the local cross-party consensus that the Ulez should cover the entirety of Greater London,' he said.

"However, the speed at which the mayor of London has sought to introduce the extension and the lack of financial support afforded to residents remains unacceptable."
