DRIVERS not using their indicators is one of the most infuriating things out on the road.

Not only is it lazy, it's often dangerous if you don't know the next move somebody is going to make.

And not using your car's indicators could actually end up costing you a lot.

There's the possibility of fines of up to £5,000 and as many as nine points on your licence.

According to section 3 of the Road Traffic Act 1988: 'If a person drives a mechanically propelled vehicle on a road or other public place without due care and attention, or without reasonable consideration for other persons using the road or place, he is guilty of an offence.'

Using your car's indicators is vital to driving safely and not using them could easily be considered a lack of reasonable consideration for others.

The Highway Code's rule 103 says: 'Signals warn and inform other road users, including pedestrians, of your intended actions.

'You should always:

  • give clear signals in plenty of time, having checked it is not misleading to signal at that time
  • use them to advise other road users before changing course or direction, stopping or moving off
  • cancel them after use

Three new Highway Code rules which could see you fined £2,500 for breaking them

The new highway code hierarchy explained – cyclists get priority over drivers

  • make sure your signals will not confuse others. If, for instance, you want to stop after a side road, do not signal until you are passing the road. If you signal earlier it may give the impression that you intend to turn into the road. Your brake lights will warn traffic behind you that you are slowing down
  • use an arm signal to emphasise or reinforce your signal if necessary. Remember that signalling does not give you priority.'
