The UBC Math Student Union sloganI had a few good friends at UBC, and one of them was a math teacher at UBC. I remember them from when we first met, and I remember how they had a big influence on my life. One of my best friends was a math teacher at UBC. At the time, though, there was this mutual respect and appreciation between us. We were both interested in the same topics. We had similar interests and were able to share things in a non-intimidating way that no one actually expected. We were constantly pushing each other to improve our own teaching methods, and to become more interested in the practical aspects of learning. As a math student at UBC, I was always fascinated with the idea of how people taught mathematics. Students were constantly developing new methods and approaches. I got to know a lot of teachers and they all had different approaches. Some of them used the classroom as a laboratory, where they taught by playing with problems and solving them. A few of them used homework problems for more formal lessons that lasted much longer than what we were used to. I was never able to come across a teacher who would simply be a classroom teacher. I always wanted to learn more about how a teacher actually learned. I wanted to learn more about how they solved problems. The UBC Math Student Union slogan makes me think of all these conversations about teaching and learning. The slogan also reminds me of the question the UBC Math Student Union was trying to answer in their first post:What makes a good teacher. The UBC Math Student Union slogan really resonated with me. Its a question that you can only answer if you want to become a teacher. And so Im going to start my journey:I want to learn about the idea of teaching in a classroom. I want to learn about the process of developing methods, techniques.
