A Cold Weather Payment is issued if the average temperature in an area is record as, or forecast to be, zero degrees celsius or below over seven consecutive days. People can expect to receive £25 for each seven day period of very cold weather during the eligible time period. The Cold Weather Payment scheme runs from November 1, 2021, to March 31, 2022 this year.
People can get a Cold Weather Payment if they are in receipt of certain benefits or receiving Support for Mortgage Interest.
The eligible benefits outlined by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) are:
- Pension Credit
- Income Support
- Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
- Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
- Universal Credit
- Support for Mortgage Interest
For some of these, however, there are certain rules to apply, and it is worth checking on the Government website.
After each period of very cold weather in someone’s area they should get a payment within 14 working days.
It is paid into the same bank or building society account as normal benefit payments.
The DWP explains that between November and March last year, almost £100million was paid out in total to eligible individuals and families.
The sum could be even more important as Britain finds itself in the midst of an energy crisis, with rising prices.
Baroness Stedman-Scott, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for the DWP, commented on the matter.

She said: “Winter can be a difficult time for people.
“This year, it’s more important than ever to make sure those eligible for our Cold Weather Payment are receiving it to help keep homes warm as temperatures drop.
“You can check online to see if your area is due a payment so you can plan ahead.”
Those who are eligible will not need to take any action, as they will be paid automatically.
However, if someone has not received the payment and is eligible, they are encouraged to contact their pension centre or Jobcentre Plus office.
Those who get Universal Credit can sign into their account and add a note to their journal about the matter.
Most importantly, a Cold Weather Payment does not impact a person’s other benefits so they can claim without reticence.
But how can Britons check if they are due to receive a payment in their local area?

To help people see if they could get a payment, the Government has developed a special tool.
Available online, Britons can log on to the dedicated website which is a postcode checker.
All individuals will need to do is enter the first part of their postcode into the tool to see the results.
For example, if someone’s postcode is LS1 1AG, they will only need to enter ‘LS1’.
The checker will then provide details on when the payment was triggered, alongside the weather station which recorded the temperature in the area.
Britons will be able to check multiple postcodes should they so need to help family and friends who are also eligible.
