Report Broken Link Issue: Broken Link SEND REPORTOn the surface, a new generation of cars and trucks looking similar to your late grandfathers is more than a little surprising. The fact that the new Honda Fit and Ford Transit are also both available in a few different powertrains isnt a good sign, though. Honda is finally offering a full EV option for the Fit, and its a smart one with all the features that have become standard in the last five years. The biggest draw will be how the Fit can power the whole car, while the small Prius-like electric motor that sits under your seat can power the passenger seat only. Even the gas tank could be recharged on-the-go. Ford is doing something similar with its Transit Hybrid. Its available with a fully electric drivetrain, or the all-electric drivetrain that can go as far as 50 miles on a single charge of its 18-kWh battery. Both cars will be available this summer in a few different powertrains. 29,995 model has a single electric motor and the same gasoline engine as the Fit. The Eco model has the two motors and a gasoline engine, as well as the ability to charge using the regular power outlet. Both cars will be available for purchase as hatchbacks, SUVs, and even a crossover. To be clear, these are not plug-in electric cars. They do have the electric motors to run the front and rear wheels, but they are still gas-powered cars with wheels and tires. Its all well and good to say your car is electric, but it still needs a gasoline engine to move in the real world. While Ford boasts that it can go up to 50 miles on a single charge of the battery, the real world practicality of that might be less. While the EPA reports that the Fit can get up to 50 miles on a single charge, it still may not be enough with the electric motor running the rear wheels. But it will at least be a lot more practical to have two drivetrains going in the same vehicle.
