Last week Chancellor Jeremy Hunt confirmed the energy price guarantee will be extended beyond April to help with the rising cost of energy bills. However, Mr Hunt also said it would increase from £2,500 a year to £3,000 from April next year. The rise means households won’t pay the £3,739 that was predicted by energy analysts at Cornwall Insight.

Titled “What’s happening with the Energy Price Guarantee?” and on the homepage of its website, British Gas’ message sought to explain the changes to its customers.

The energy firm noted how it was still unclear as to exactly what the impact of the new price guarantee would entail for customers.

However, British Gas said it would contact customers once it knew what changes meant for individual households.

It also reiterated that the current energy price guarantee would be in place until March 31, 2023.

It reassured customers that they will still receive the Government monthly discounts as planned.

Households are currently getting around £65 of their bills every month following the Government’s intervention to help with soaring energy bill costs.

The Chancellor also announced in his statement that further financial support would be made available for those most vulnerable to the price rises.

Under its message, British Gas provided a link to simple energy savings tips that all households can implement.

The energy firm noted not only were the tips simple, but they also won’t cost customers a thing saying “if you haven’t got round to doing it yet, now is the time”.

It said: “We’re all trying to keep our energy bills down at the moment.

“Our top tips can help you save money by making your home more energy-efficient but without making things any less cosy.”

The energy firm also included short videos for its customers to watch to help them implement the changes.

The first suggestion shared by British Gas was to turn down the heating by one degree.

British Gas analysis of its smart thermostat data shows the average customer could save £115 a year on their energy bills by turning their heating down by one degree.

Another tip is to reduce the temperature of the boiler flow, British Gas explained the default boiler flow temperature is normally set at 70 degrees.

By reducing it to 55-60 degrees, customers could save up to six percent on their energy use.

British Gas also advised customers to move furniture away from radiators and to close the curtains at night to keep the heat in the house.

Other simple tips include turning off lights, keeping the oven door closed whilst using it, washing clothes at a lower temperature, and using the microwave more.

British Gas also includes a list of energy-saving investments which can also help reduce energy consumption.

It said: “If you’ve got a bit of money to spend, you’ll be able to save even more energy and make a big difference to your energy bills.”

These include things such as smart thermostats, radiator reflector panels, ‘eco-balls’ for tumble dryers, and thermostatic radiator valves.
