Soap scum is a filmy layer that can cause streaks and marks on sinks, taps and draining boards. The marks appear when the ingredients in soap react with minerals in water and cling to surfaces. They can be particularly noticeable on shiny surfaces, especially in areas with hard water where minerals are more prevalent.
When soap scum is allowed to build up and harden, it can become even more of a headache to clean.
Made with simple and natural ingredients, Jen Chillingsworth shared a recipe homeowners can follow to create a lavender cream cleaner that is an eco-friendly alternative to shop-bought products.
What’s more, this recipe can be altered by adding a scent to it to suit your taste.
It can be used for cleaning a kitchen and for cleaning the bathroom too.
Jen explained: “This cream cleaner is great for using in the kitchen and the bathroom on sinks, draining boards and the bathtub.
“It’s highly effective at cutting through soap scum and is safe to use on plastic, ceramic and stainless steel.”
This homemade kitchen cleaner can be fragranced or not.
The expert suggested lavender as the scent, but Britons may like to choose another fragrance, such a eucalyptus.

For this recipe, the following ingredients will be needed:
- Glass mixing bowl
- 500g glass container with lid
- 200g baking soda
- Organic liquid castile soap
- Small handful of dried lavender flowers
- Six to 10 drops of lavender essential oil (optional)
The first step is to combine the baking soda and castile soap by stirring them together.
There is no precise measurement for the castile soap.
The ratio is approximately one third to one half the measurement of the baking of soda.
However, you need to add enough for the mixture to achieve a paste-like consistency.
After, add the lavender flowers or essential oil, if using.
Then stir the mixture until it is well combined and pour the mixture into a clean, glass storage jar.
To use the homemade solution, Jen advised: “Apply a little of the cream cleaner to a reusable sponge or cotton cloth.
“Using a circular motion, rub the cleaner into the sink or bathtub until the area is completely covered.
“Rinse away with a little warm water. This is a fresh cleaning product, so should be used straight away.”
Cleaning enthusiast Emma Reed agreed with how well this homemade cleaning solution can perform.
She said: “This is honestly one the best cleaners I have ever used.
“I use it for sinks, bathrooms, on skirting boards, doors, marks on walls and so on. It is safe to be used all around the home.”
Homemade cream cleaner is a gentle combination of natural materials that can tackle grease with ease.
Safe to apply on to plastic, ceramic and stainless steel, it can be used to clean kitchens and bathrooms.
