The property market saw a huge increase in people buying a new home for the first time in 2021 and 2022. This increase means that for many people, it’s their first-time decorating, and they need inspiration. In fact, Google searches for “interior design ideas to improve homes” have increased by over 250 percent in the past 12 months. Plus, people looking to sell their homes are searching for the small changes they can make to increase the price, with searches for “what will increase the value of my home” shooting up by 200 percent over the past 12 months.
Whether homeowners have just bought a house or they’re looking to improve the one they’ve been living in for years to help sell, an expert from My Bespoke Room has shared six things to make a house look amazing.
Lucy Henderson, head of design at My Bespoke Room, explained: “A few tips and tricks can make a big difference when designing and fitting out a home.
“Even small mistakes can make your home seem less appealing to potential buyers.

Picking the ideal wall paint
When it comes to walls there are a few points to consider as the wrong colour paint could put off a buyer completely.
Lucy said: “In our experience, bright colours such as red, orange, yellow, and purple are less popular amongst homeowners.
“Sticking with neutral colours or green and blue tones is necessary to increase a potential buyer’s likeliness to fall in love with the property.”
This allows potential buyers to easily imagine themselves living in the home without being distracted by bold colours.
Wall panelling has recently become popular, with searches for ‘full wall panelling ideas’ increasing by over 80 percent in the last 12 months.
The interior pro noted: “Timber panelling can add a ‘wow factor’ to certain properties, especially period properties.
“Half-height, full-height, or painted wall panelling can add interesting detail to rooms, like hallways and bedrooms.
“Well-made panelling adds a more high-end feeling to a property and can make it appear more expensive.”

This feature can help a room look and feel cosier and intimate.
Plus, for those adding vertical planks of wood to a wall, it could help the space seem larger as they’ll draw your eye upwards towards the ceiling.
Make the right flooring choices
When picking the flooring for your home it’s important to make sure that it’s kept consistent, as picking good-quality flooring can improve the value of your house, according to Lucy.
She said: “You can, for example, pick between timber or tiles, or even high-quality vinyl flooring which is often hard to distinguish from wood or tiles.
“If your home has carpets with stains or wear and tear, it’s a good idea to replace these to freshen up the space and add extra value to your house.”
Installing smart features
The number of smart homes is expected to rise to 478.2 million by 2025.
So as more homeowners move toward smarter homes, the expert suggested installing smart features such as smart thermostats or a smart tap in your kitchen to raise your home’s value.
These features also make homes more convenient for current homeowners.
However, Lucy warned: “It is important to remember that such technology can become outdated fast.”
Shower, bath or both?
Not having a bath will not necessarily devalue your home, however, installing a bath can make it more attractive to families with younger children.
The interior designer explained: “Many homeowners prefer a larger walk-in shower, but the option of being able to have a relaxing bath can be tempting too.
“If you have the option to, then having both can be an ideal solution.”
Furniture to choose
When it comes to choosing furniture for your home, bespoke storage solutions can add value.
Lucy noted: “This is specifically the case for built-in wardrobes, or coat and shoe storage cupboards.
“They’re also a great way to make use of dead space, such as under the stairs.”
In the kitchen, a bespoke dining bench seat and window seats are a great way to utilise smaller spaces, as these can also be used as additional storage.
A good choice of kitchen cabinets, worktop, kitchen island and tiles will also add value.
However, the expert warned: “One thing to remember is that large pieces of furniture or too many items can make a room feel cluttered and viewers may feel put off.”
